Vänersborg 18MW

AKJ Energiteknik is building a new pellet-fired 18MW boiler plant for reserve and peak load power for Vattenfall'sdistrict heating network in Vänersborg.

The district heating network in Vänersborg is approx. 160 GWh and is mainly supplied with waste heat from the Vargön Alloys smelter. Vargön Alloys produces ferroalloys for stainless steel and the process generates large amounts of excess heat that is recovered via exhaust gas boilers connected to the district heating network. Vattenfall is now investing in a new district heating plant with a boiler system from AKJ Energiteknik, which will replace oil boilers fired with bio-oil.

The combustion equipment is performed with AKJ's advanced combustion system with movable grate system for dry biofuels and optimized to maximize operational availability and control range. The contract includes design, fabrication, erection and commissioning of two redundant boiler lines with fuel handling, incinerator, boiler, flue gas cleaning with electrostatic precipitator, mechanical, piping and electrical installations and control system.

New boiler room Arla Foods dairy in Falkenberg

AKJ Energiteknik is building a new boiler plant that converts Arla Foods' dairy in Falkenberg from fossil to renewable and enables continued expansion of fossil-free district heating in Falkenberg.

Falkenberg Energi produces about 70GWh annually and will own and operate the new boiler center. Arla is the world's largest producer of organic milk products. Arla's dairy in Falkenberg is Europe's largest cottage cheese dairy and produces cottage cheese and protein products. Total production corresponds to about 100 million kg of milk per year.

The new boiler plant is designed with an exterior architectural design in corten color with parts in expanded metal and special lighting. The entire plant is designed for fully automated unmanned operation with fuel handling where the chip trucks will drive into the plant and dump with closed gates.

The plant is adapted for high operational availability and environmental performance and is prepared for electricity generation with ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) turbine and flue gas condensation. The combustion equipment is adapted to mainly burn local forest fuels in the form of logging residues and is carried out with AKJ's advanced combustion and control systems in combination with NOx reduction equipment SNCR (Selective Non Catalytic Reduction).

The contract includes external ground, foundation, concrete works, frame, superstructure, scales, fuel handling with overhead crane, wood chip boiler with SNCR, biogas boiler, accumulator, flue gas cleaning with electric filter, back-up power unit, piping, electrical, control and monitoring system with Citect.

Strömsund 8MW

AKJ Energiteknik is building a new 8MW wood chip-fired boiler plant with flue gas condensation and electricity generation for Strömsunds Energi.

The district heating network is about 35GWh. The existing base load boiler is from the 80s and now Strömsunds Energi has invested in a new modern boiler plant from AKJ Energiteknik. The goal of the investment is to get a safe fossil-free base load production and enable continued expansion. The new plant is equipped with its own electricity production with ORC turbine, organic rankine cycle.

The contract includes fuel handling with rod feeder, incinerator with moving grate system, hot water boiler, ash discharge, flue gas cleaning with electrostatic precipitator, flue gas condensation, chimney, standby power, mechanical, piping, electrical and control installations.

The combustion equipment is carried out with AKJ's moving grate combustion system and advanced controls for sawmill waste in the form of bark and sawdust as well as wood chips and logging residues. The plant is optimized to maximize annual efficiency, operational availability and minimize emissions.

Moelven Valåsen – 12MW bark boiler

AKJ Energiteknik has been given renewed confidence to build another 12MW bark boiler at Moelven Valåsen and expand the distribution system to 40MW.

Moelven is one of Europe's largest manufacturers of sawn wood products and Valåsen is Moelven's largest sawmill. Valåsen is one of the most high-tech sawmills in the world with a strong focus on digitalization and energy efficiency and is now taking the next step and building a pellet factory for further processing of the sawmill's by-products.

This new pellet plant will have a capacity of 105 000 tons per year. The raw material will be sawdust from spruce and pine. The pellets will be produced by drying sawdust with a calorific value of ~2.3 kWh/kg in a belt dryer from ~50% moisture content down to ~15% and then pressed into pellets with a density of ~650 kg/m3 and calorific value of ~4.5 kWh/kg.

In addition to the investment in a new pellet factory and a new boiler plant, Moelven Valåsen is implementing an extensive investment program with the goal of increasing production to 500,000m3sw. As a first step, Moelven invested in 2021 in a 12MW boiler plant from AKJ Energiteknik, followed by a new saw intake, a new debarking machine, a new saw line for small timber, a new raw material sorting system and increased drying capacity with new dryers.

AKJ is the general contractor for the new boiler plant. The contract includes earthworks and foundations, concrete and construction works for new boiler house and fuel storage upgrades, fuel conveyors, incinerator, boiler, flue gas cleaning with electrostatic precipitator, mechanical and electrical installations, control system and new heat distribution system.

The combustion equipment is performed with AKJ's wet sawmill fuel combustion system and optimized to maximize operational availability and minimize emissions.

The project has started with the demolition of older buildings, we at AKJ thank Moelven for the order and look forward to a continued good cooperation.

Sawmill Fagersta 5MW

Karl Segerström's sawmill is located outside Fagersta and produces structural timber for glulam beams, roof trusses and panels. Karl Segerström AB specializes in spruce. To enable expansion, they are now investing in a new modern fully-automated boiler plant from AKJ Energiteknik where they plan to burn most of the bark. A complete new boiler plant is being built next to the sawmill.

AKJ Energiteknik is the turnkey contractor for the machine and process equipment. The contract includes design, installation and commissioning of a complete boiler plant with fuel handling with rod feeder, incinerator, boiler, flue gas cleaning with electric filter, mechanical, pipe and electrical installations and control systems.

The combustion equipment is performed with AKJ's moving grate technology combustion system for moist sawmill fuels with spruce, pine bark, sawdust and is optimized to maximize operational availability and low NOx values.

Kiruna – 10MW pellets

Kiruna is undergoing extensive urban transformation due to the expanding mining industry, while the energy system is being converted to be supplied mainly with waste heat from LKAB in the future. LKAB's ore refining processes generate large amounts of excess heat in the chemical reaction that occurs when magnetite oxidizes to hematite, after which iron ore concentrates are pelletized into transportable balls. The waste heat is part of a larger green transition with the goal of Kiruna being climate neutral by 2025. Existing waste and oil boilers are planned to be replaced gradually. The new pellet boilers will serve as plannable peak and reserve load boilers during the coldest months and as a complement to the waste heat.

AKJ Energiteknik delivers two prefabricated boiler centers to Kiruna for planned reserve and peak load power.

The boilers are delivered as prefabricated modular boiler centers, so-called TPC, (transportable boiler center) with a pellet boiler of 5MW in each boiler center. The boiler centers are prefabricated in the workshop and are made in maximum size to be moved and driven on the road without barriers and police escorts.

The combustion equipment is carried out with AKJ's water-cooled moving grate combustion system for dry biofuels with pellets and is optimized to maximize operational availability and control range.

The contract includes the design, manufacture, assembly and commissioning of complete boiler plants with fuel handling, incinerator, boiler, flue gas cleaning with electric filters, mechanical, piping and electrical installations and control systems.
