Moelven Vänerply’s new 18-MW biofuel-fired steam boiler plant has been commissioned

Moelven Vänerply’s new 18-MW biofuel-fired steam boiler plant was commissioned this spring and is now supplying process steam to the plywood mill.

AKJ Energiteknik has built a new power plant featuring an 18-MW biofuel-fired steam boiler and a 4.5-MW electric steam boiler for Moelven, one of Europe’s largest producers of sawn lumber.

Moelven Vänerply is located in Otterbäcken, about 40 km north of Mariestad, and produces spruce and pine plywood—about 90,000 m³, equivalent to 6 million m², per year.

The production process involves heating debarked logs in hot water, turning them into veneer sheets, and then drying them—an energy-intensive step in the process. Byproducts such as bark, wood chips, and sawdust are reused as fuel.

The existing power plant, which was built in 1969, is now being replaced by a modern steam boiler plant. The turnkey contract includes earthwork and foundation work, construction of a new boiler house and fuel storage facility, fuel conveyors, combustion chambers, a steam boiler, flue gas cleaning with an electrostatic precipitator, mechanical and electrical installations, an electrically powered steam boiler, a control system, and new systems for steam and feedwater.

The biofuel-fired steam boiler is designed as a water-tube boiler with a downstream economizer. The combustion system is based on AKJ technology with a reciprocating grate, optimized for moist waste products from the sawmill industry. The plant is designed for the highest possible operational availability while minimizing emissions.

Laxå 6 + 1.5 MW: A rapid transition to lower energy costs—from wood briquettes to minimally processed forest fuels, bark, and logging residues.

Update: The facility has been commissioned, tested, inspected, and approved. AKJ’s project model for turnkey contracts enables fast and cost-effective projects with a simple process for the customer.

AKJ Energiteknik has built a new 6 MW biofuel-fired boiler plant for Laxå Värme. It took 13 months from the signing of the contract to the approval of the final inspection.

The district heating network in Laxå supplies approximately 30 GWh annually. Laxå Värme is now investing in a modern and robust boiler plant from AKJ Energiteknik to ensure efficient and reliable heat production based on local forest fuels such as wood chips, bark, and logging residues.

The turnkey contract included a boiler house with fuel handling and a hydraulic feeder, a combustion furnace with a reciprocating grate, a hot-water boiler, ash removal, flue gas cleaning with fabric filters, flue gas condensation, a chimney, as well as mechanical, piping, and electrical installations and the installation of control systems.

The combustion system is based on AKJ’s advanced technology featuring a reciprocating grate, optimized for forest fuels such as bark, wood chips, and logging residues. The plant is designed to maximize annual efficiency and operational availability while minimizing emissions.

Thank you to Laxå Värme and everyone on the AKJ team, including our suppliers, for the excellent collaboration.

Talgø MøreTre Update

A thermal energy storage system, a 3 MW biofuel boiler, and a 3 MW electric boiler have been installed. Plumbing and construction work is underway.

AKJ Energiteknik is building a new, robust, and reliable boiler plant for Talgø MøreTre, a Norwegian sawmill known for its production of Royal-treated wood—lumber that is vacuum-treated and boiled in linseed oil, resulting in a lifespan of up to 50 years.

The process is energy-intensive. The facility also supplies district heating. Talgø MøreTre is now investing in a robust and resilient energy system that uses the company’s own wood briquettes as the primary fuel, while also utilizing electricity when spot prices are low. The facility will therefore also include an electric boiler and an energy storage system with a 270 m³ storage tank.

The turnkey contract includes fuel handling with hydraulic feeders, a combustion furnace with a reciprocating grate, a hot-water boiler, ash discharge, flue gas cleaning with fabric filters, a hot-water storage tank, an electric boiler, as well as mechanical, piping, and electrical installations, and the installation of control systems.

The combustion system is based on AKJ’s advanced water-cooled technology with a reciprocating grate for dry biofuels. The system is designed for maximum annual efficiency, high availability, and low emissions.

Sölvesborg 6 MW Update

The installation of the main components and the on-site mechanical work have begun.

AKJ Energiteknik is building a new 6 MW biofuel-fired boiler plant with flue gas condensation and an ORC turbine for combined heat and power generation for Sölvesborg Energi. The district heating network in Sölvesborg covers approximately 64 GWh and is largely supplied by waste heat from the Sylvamos (formerly Stora Enso) paper mill outside Bromölla.

Sölvesborg Energi is now investing in a new, modern boiler plant from AKJ Energiteknik. The goal is to ensure robust, predictable, and fossil-free heat production that also allows for future expansion. The new facility will be equipped with its own electricity generation via an ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) turbine.

The contract includes fuel handling with a hydraulic feeder, a combustion chamber with a moving grate, a hot-water boiler, ash discharge, flue gas cleaning with an electrostatic precipitator, flue gas condensation, power generation using ORC, a stack, and integration of backup power, as well as mechanical, piping, electrical, and control system installations.

The combustion system is based on AKJ’s advanced control technology and moving grate technology, optimized for forest fuels such as bark, wood chips, and logging residues. The plant is designed to maximize annual efficiency and operational availability while minimizing emissions.
